story boards and scripts

Scripts

In our film we did not want to much diegetic dialogue, we wanted the main focus to be around the main character in order for them to get to know her traits and personality. We also wanted her to introduce the other characters so that we get an impression of their social status in school, what other people think of them and to find out what the main characters relationship with the other social group is/was like.

In the voice over, Jessie, the main characters played by Courtney talks about her life previous to the present day (this is what it comes across as to the audience). She spoke about this in a lot of detail in combination with her relationship with other social groups talking about what their social status was before with the group and what it is in the present day. She explains to the target audience what the other stereotypical social groups think are of her now.

At the end of the voiceover she says 'And Lastly this is me, Jessie and this is my story'. This tells the audience specifically that she is the main character and you will be watching her story right from where it went wrong and how she ended up where she did. However we trick the audience by making them think that this is the present day. The present day actually is her in her new school. We did this so that the audience think there is not a happy ending.

Story Boards

Here are my films story boards and shot lists.

The story board contains what dialog will be included, what shot type it will be and what shot number it is. The pictures show where the shot will be set and who will be in the shot and what the characters will be doing. We typed up our shot list separately as well so it was clearer when we were filming what shots we would be taking, what of and where.

Initial Ideas And Risk Assessment

These are the the papers where we wrote our initial ideas to our film and the risks we need to consider.
Initial Ideas

First we wrote all the cliche idea for teen angst film these included
  • Sex
  • Party's
  • Alcohol/Drugs
  • Parents Splitting Up
  • Abuse
  • Mental Health
  • A Loved One Dying/Terminally Ill
  • Moving School/City
  • Bullying
  • Bitch Girls
  • Fall Outs
  • Pregnancy
We liked the idea of pregnancy because not may teen angst films have made a film revolving around pregnancy. Also we knew if we were to follow through with this idea we would add our own twist on it. We considered what generic conventions of teen angst films we would include Such as
  • High Key Lighting
  • Girl As Main Character
  • A Voice Over At Beginning And Throughout By Main Character
  • Different Stereotypical Social Groups
  • Bitchy Girls
  • Main Setting In School
We included all these generic conventions of teen angst films in our film in order for our audience to be able to recognise what type of film this was so it would attract them and in order for the audience to be able to relate to our film. It was important for us especially to include many different social groups, this was so we attracted many different social groups in real life as they would relate to the characters and they would want to see how the characters life's planned out and how they are similar.

Risk Assessment

Once we had an idea about what shots we would be taking and using we had to think and the risks that would come across when filming. One of the main factors for use was the chance of getting hit by a car as we were filming a mildly busy road. There was three of us making our film at this time one of us were acting the other was filming and one of us was checking for cars and other vehicles and people that we needed to watch out for, both for the purpose of ours and others around us safety and in order to make sure nothing interfered with our filming.

When the main character is walking past the sixth form room someone could have walked into her. As this was a possibility we filmed when the sixth form common room was not that busy in order to decrease the chance of this happening. However when we was filming someone did walk out but round the characters. We felt this made our film better as it looked lively and full.

Research On Teen Angst Openings

We researched and analysed several different teen angst title sequences and opening scenes in order to get some ideas of our own for our film. We spotted and noted the typical generic conventions of a teen angst film. We looked at Easy A, Footloose and clueless.

The generic conventions Easy A included was:
-High key lighting, this suggest realism and it sets a soft atmosphere to it.
-It is set in an high school(college)
-Main characters a girl
-Monologue/voice over of the main character talking about our characters
-Represents bitching which is typical of a teen angst and is stereotypical of teenagers.
-Slang is included, shows the target audience is teenagers as the older generation would not understand.
-Titles are places in odd places such as floor suggesting that high school and teenagers lives are busy
-Low key lighting is included when adults are in the scene. shows contrast, adults have low key lighting, teenagers have high key lighting -Main title is placed in a tree, this points out a pair of shoes in the tree emphasising that teenagers mess about and get in to trouble
-Main characters book are knocked out of her hands, emphasises the school setting and that bullying takes part, also it shows that there are popular people higher than her in the school and that can do what they want.

Generic conventions of Footloose
-teenage party (stereotypical of teenagers)
-young teenagers/adults
-upbeat loud dance music
-alcohol
-high key lighting
-empty red cups, this is using iconography and stereotyping teenagers as being messy
-close up on feet suggest dancing and performing
-no adults/old people, disabled people and children
-they value drink, music, friends and being with friends(hedonism and hedonistic)
-different social groups with mixed-sex male and female, mix ethics are seen(white, black and Asian country's)
-title 'Footloose' looks like stage lights, connotes the performing aspect and some are hand written connoting they are still at school
-they are dancing on a stage
-diegetic sound (them singing emphasis's their interests in music further)
-layer sound, diegetic and non-diegetic

Generic conventions of Clueless
-high key lighting
-upbeat current music
-voice over to introduce characters
-main characters an American girl
-layered sound including cars, music and laughing

Film Producers Logo's

Dream Works
Dream Works logo connotes that they are a big company and that they produce lots of children's films. I think this because of where it is set. There is a crescent moon with a child sitting on it fishing. This connotes that they are higher than the rest and better. The clouds and the set of night time connotes the peacefulness and calmness of there films. The colour purple connotes that there films are broad and not just for a particular gender, the colours also creates peacefulness and calmness. The capital letters and the font connotes that it is a big company. The white text looks like it is lighting up the moon and clouds connoting that Dream Works brighten things up. The colour white also connotes the pureness of there films.

Universal

The Universal logo is set in space. The company's name is written in capital letters over the earth, this connotes that they are better than the rest and they are at the top. The text is silver with a gold out line, this connotes that they are expensive and that there movies are of high quality and importance. The glow around the earth connotes how universal lighten up the world with thier films. The overall impression of the universal logo is power.

Dream Street Pictures
Dream Street Pictures uses the colour blue, white and black, these colours are simple and get the point which they are trying to make come across. The colours blue and white connotes naturalness, and peacefulness. At the top centre of the page there is a road with a circle of light around it, the rest is dark. This connotes that Dream Street Pictures films create a light at the end of the tunnel. The words dream street are in block capital letters, this is so it stands out and so people know who it is who has created the film.

Paramount
The Paramount logo is of the top of some mountains. This connotes they are powerful and a large production company. The words Paramount are placed on the tip of the mountain, this connotes that they are of higher power and quality than everyone else and that they are top in the film industry. The font of the company's logo connotes that their films are elegant. The stars surrounding the top of the mountain connotes that Paramount are of high quality and that they have a vast amount of types of films and that they exceed in all types of areas in the film industry. The detailed scenic view connotes that they put a lot of time and detail into their films and the films will be of high quality. The natural colours they use connotes that their films are pure.

Walt Disney
Walt Disney uses the colours blue and white. These colours connote the natural, angelic and pureness of their films. The centre of the page has a picture of a castle. This connotes the power of Walt Disney's films and that their films are fit for a queen. The castle also gives an insight to the audience of what they might expect from a Walt Disney film(e.g. fairy tales). There is a line going around the image of a castle, this connotes that Walt Disney is a well rounded company and that they cover different movie genres and that they are not just for a certain gender or age. The Words Walt Disney are written in bold and capitals in a playful font, this connotes the fun of their company and films, it also attracts a younger audience because it is an attractive font.

Warner Brothers
The Warner Brothers logo is set above the clouds, this connotes that they are above everyone else and are of high importance and quality. The picture in the centre looks like a shield, this connotes that they are stronger and more powerful than any other film company. The shield has the initials of the company on it in block capitals to make it stand and out, this connotes that their company is bold and strong. Their name is then again written ' Warner bros. pictures' on a banner in block capitals which is over the shield, this connotes that Warner Brothers is a company to celebrate and be proud of. The banner curls round the logo connotes that Warner Brothers is a well rounded film Brand. They use the colours blue, white and gold. The blue and white connotes that there films are heavenly and light, the colours fit in with where it is set, this connotes natural and pureness. the gold connotes that Warner Brothers is expensive and has high quality and expectations.

The poster on the left is the most common. It is roughly half text and a half image. The poster has a cream background with a faint image of pylons showing through. This is so it doesnt take away from the main image of the main actor and his horse. They have included ratings from known companys to show off how good the film is.The poster on the right however has more story behind it, however if you have not seen the trailer the image wont make much sense. I think it is effective however due to the colours and quirky images. Here is the films trailer.

The trailer is successful because it gives us an insight into the film. It draws you in and makes you want to know what happens and find out more. All of these factors make it a successful film.

The Film had been advertised through media site like facebook, twitter and youtube. it has also been advertised through TV advertisement, interviews and posters on billboards etc.
The visual advertisement of Gravity clearly shows where the film is based to show an audience what to expect. Sandra Bullock and George Clooney's names are also clearly stated in capital letters. This is to interest an audience into watching the film and to give them an insight of what they might expect due to who the actors are. They all also include the films slogan 'Don't let go' which is also in capital letters. They include this on there advertisement so that the film can be recognised and later be known for it. The images on the posters, especially the two above are effortless and simple, this is to concentrate on the astronauts in the picture and to exaggerate the quietness in space in contrast to what the film is really like.

This official teaser trailer is 1 minute and 31 seconds long. It has a total of 8,395,149 views on youtube. The reason I believe it held so much power, atmosphere and tension was due to the sound. At the beginning it is light, subtle and peaceful, 30 seconds into the trailer there is a loud crash sound effect. There is a large contrast between the two and I believe it shocks the viewer. There are repeated stabbing like sounds, heavy breathing and fast pace voices which you can not understand. This mixed in with the fast pace camera shots and graphics all contribute to the manic and confusion of the film and the actors situation. At 1 minute 22 seconds Sandra Bullock says 'anybody, please copy' and it falls silent again. The contrast in sound and fast pace camera shots and graphics makes this film successful.

What I learnt from creating my own swede

During pre production we came across some problems. These were location, props, lighting and time, however we soon resolved them. We learnt that in order to create a swede there needed to be alot of preperation and planning. We needed a location where it was dark but also where you could clearly see the actors, we filmed during the day which proved to be difficult, with thought we asked permission to use the drama studio and the problem was resolved. We needed props which you could not buy for a certain scene and due to the size it needed to be it was not possible to buy, we solved this problem by making it ourselves. We didnt have alot of time to create our swede and therefore it was rushed, the lighting also was not correct. With this in hind sight we learnt we needed to be  more prepared and put more thought and time into pre production. During post production myself and my partner I was editing with had never done editing before, it was new to us. Luckily we had enough footage to work with however we came across technical difficulties. We needed spooky music to add to the eeriness of our swede. We overcame this by trial and error. In the end we overcame our problems and we learnt a great deal about effort, time and planning that needs to go into a swede to make it successful.

Pliminary Task

In this task we filmed short clips and edited them so they fitted in together. we cut out sound and parts of clips we didn't need, we also added a fade to black out at the end so that it ran smoothly. Me and Zoe were acting while Aimee was filming and Courtney was directing us. we all had different jobs we had to follow. during the editing process Zoe and Aimee took control of the editing whilst me and Courtney were telling them which parts to cut and which parts to add.

my blogg

A Swede is a film which is made without a budget. They are short films which show the basis of a film and the important parts in it. They are only a couple of minutes long, however some are slightly longer. Here is a swede which I found to be interesting.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dOwNwsxaW5k By making our swede we found that film production is diffucult in finding good locations where you cant hear sounds in the background. we also found that finding that you have to find the correct lighting and location in order to make your movie come across in the way you want it. for example ours was a horror comedy so we needed a dark location. we produced our film during the day but we needed it to be dark, we solved this problem by picking a location which we could make pitch black,we used the drama studio and solved the problem. just like in other big movies, they encounter problems which they need to solve, however in big movies they would film at night and would not come across this problem. During pre production in film the financial stage is confirmed and the cast, locations, director and cinematographer is set and agreed. Also the screenplay is almost complete. during this process the script is taken apart scene by scene to sort out necessary locations, costumes, cast members, props, and special and visual effects. A schedule is produced in order to make sure that things like locations are available at certain times for the film makers. Things like sets are constructed, the finance side is agreed. A crew is hired and a date is put in place for principle photography. There will also be a time where a read through of the script will take place and all the cast with speaking roles, the head of different departments, the director, producers, financers and publicists will gather together. The screen play may still be being worked on at this point but the scenes are often numbered and kept this way to avoid mis understanding. parts can be deleted or added but scenes will still be on the same page and have the same scene number. film producers prepare and supervise a film during the making of it before showing it to a film distributor or financing entity. It is their job to find an appropriate screen writer if the original script is not being used or if the original script is chosen but there are faults in it, it is up to them to hire a script doctor. On top of this they have the final say in which film director is chosen and cast questioning. The film director directs the making of a film, he is in charge of the films artistic and dramatic aspects. They visulise what they want the film to be then guide the actors and technical crew in order to make their vision.
